Synchronization of unidirectionally coupled multi-transverse-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers

چکیده
The synchronization of unidirectionally coupled multi-transverse-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is numerically studied. It is demonstrated that synchronization can be achieved between each transverse mode of a master laser and its counterpart, a slave laser. This result opens the opportunity for multichannel chaotic communications by use of multi-transverse-mode VCSELs. It is further shown that two distinct synchronization regimes exist, complete synchronization and injection locking, which can be distinguished by the lag time between the master and the slave laser intensities. © 2004 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 140.5960, 140.1540, 060.4510.

Polarization synchronization in unidirectionally coupled vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with orthogonal optical injection.
We analyze theoretically the polarization dynamics in unidirectionally coupled vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). The master VCSEL is subject to an isotropic optical feedback. The slave VCSEL is subject to an orthogonal optical injection from the master VCSEL, i.e., only the linearly polarized mode orthogonal to the dominant linearly polarized mode of the free-running slave VCSEL...
متن کاملObservation of the synchronization of chaos in mutually injected vertical-cavity surface-emitting semiconductor lasers.
Synchronization of chaotic oscillations was observed in mutually injected vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) in a low-frequency fluctuation regime. In the experiments, only one of the two polarization modes (x mode) showed synchronized oscillations, and the other polarization components (y mode) were synchronized as a result of the effect of anticorrelated oscillations that is a c...
متن کاملSingle Transverse Mode VCSELs with High Output Power Emitting in the 980 nm Wavelength Range
In recent years, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) operating in a single transverse mode have gained a growing interest in many optical fields like spectroscopy, imaging and sensing. Usually, to achieve single-mode emission in conventional oxideconfined VCSELs, the active diameter is typically scaled down to a few micrometers (≤ 4μm) which limits the optical output power. Further...

متن کاملSurface-structure-assisted chaotic mode lasing in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers.
We demonstrate chaotic mode lasing in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers at room temperature, with an open cavity confined laterally by the native oxide layer. Instead of introducing any defect mode, we show that suppression of lower-order cavity modes can be achieved by destroying vertical reflectors with a surface microstructure. Lasing on chaotic modes is observed directly through colle...
